Our About BDO
Our responsibilities

As a major UK firm, we will inevitably have an impact on our local communities and environment. So we make it our responsibility to manage and control that impact, to ensure that it is a positive one.

Our corporate social responsibility programme is a simple and effective way for BDO people to “give something back”, for instance through volunteering. We are also committed as a firm to improving local communities, and to mitigating our impact on the environment.

What do we offer?

All our people can take up to ten days a year for community volunteering. The choice of activities is up to the individual, provided it falls within the firm’s particular focus on education. Our One Firm national volunteering programme helps us understand more about the next generation, while empowering young people through our interaction with them. This also provides a valuable environment in which we can develop our own skills, while raising our profile in local communities.

We support Career Academies UK, a charity that offers educational opportunities to students from inner-city schools, and The School Governors' One-Stop Shop (SGOSS) where our people can volunteer to become governors in schools across England. We also work with a number of brokers to provide one-off career workshops at our offices.

We also operate a fund-matching scheme that contributes a total sum of up to £500 when our people raise money for charitable causes. And charity donations are easier and more efficient through our payroll giving arrangement.

BDO and the environment

As a firm of accountants, our environmental impact is relatively low. Nevertheless, we still have a serious responsibility for the planet. We run annual independent environmental audits of our business, which help us to refine our environmental management programme. Achievements include:

  • A revised Environmental Policy demonstrating our ongoing commitment, updated and endorsed by Managing Partner Simon Michaels every year
  • Significant firm-wide steps to reduce our carbon footprint and prepare us to operate in a low carbon economy
  • A comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS), which operates both internally and externally
  • ISO 14001 certification for all our national offices – a badge of quality and excellence.

Diversity and inclusion

We actively promote a fully inclusive culture. We recruit, respect and value people of all backgrounds, and encourage open discussion of diversity issues.

BDO is also an understanding employer, always willing to consider the work-life balance of our people. That means we support a flexible working culture that takes into account issues such as the needs of those with children.

We consider our diversity to be a positive asset, not only giving us a strong sense of community but also making us more effective in serving our diverse range of clients.

Our commitments to diversity and inclusion are led from the top, through a steering committee made up of members of BDO’s leadership team and other highly influential partners and employees.

BDO is a member of the equality organisations Stonewall, Race for Opportunity and Opportunity Now.
