Tax Dispute Resolution
When a taxpayer faces a tax investigation from HMRC, or decides to make a voluntary disclosure, they turn to us for expert support. For the client, the process is invariably complex and often daunting. For our team, it is a chance to demonstrate our specialist expertise through intense negotiation with HMRC, and so obtain a satisfactory settlement that all parties can agree on.
An investigation will typically take place under HMRC’s Code of Practice 8 or 9, or through a voluntary disclosure from the client. However, no two investigations are the same. We deal with both tax avoidance and tax evasion cases, and address a multitude of different issues relating to the activities of companies, individuals and trusts, both in the UK and overseas. As a result, you can expect a great variety of work and constant new experience.
As part of our team, you will work closely with senior members to help deliver our range of services, often to tight deadlines. This practical experience will serve to reinforce and enrich the specialist tax knowledge that you gain through your professional studies. You will also learn how to relate both to clients and to representatives of HMRC throughout often lengthy enquiries.
You’ll be assigned plenty of responsibility early on, such as collating and analysing relevant documentation and information supplied, and preparing high quality schedules, tax computations and appendices for tax disclosure reports. Later you will take responsibility for preparing reports for submission to HMRC. You will have opportunities to accompany senior team members to meetings between the client and HMRC, and to assist with both preparation and follow-up.
This is a chance to take on a uniquely different challenge, by joining one of the UK’s leading advisory teams dealing with tax dispute resolution.
To qualify as a tax adviser in this field, you will study towards the CTA (from the Chartered Institute of Taxation). Exams will cover general taxation (both direct taxes such as income and corporation tax as well as VAT), the interaction of taxes, practice ethics and administration, along with some further specialist tax areas.
We help you to enhance this learning with our Initial Professional Development programme, through which you can develop the necessary personal, commercial and technical skills. Most of all, you will learn to exercise professional judgement in real situations.
